The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, with the support of famous Nollywood celebrities, has embarked on an awareness programme to educate parents and guardians on the importance of early child education.

According to a statement on Monday, the LASUBEB Executive Chairman, Mr Wahab Alawiye-King, made this known during the rallies held at markets in Ikosi-Isheri and Bariga.

Alawiye-King, along with Nollywood actors’ including Jide Kosoko, Ibrahim Chatta, Afiz Oyetoro and  Funso Adeolu among others stated that the Eko Excel initiative of the government had enhanced child learning in the state.

He said, “For children to be able to compete with their peers globally, the state government has integrated technology into the classrooms to enhance learning and teaching outcomes in Lagos State’s public primary schools, under the Eko Excel initiative of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Education is not only the responsibility of the government, but also of parents and the community; so encourage your wards to go to school.”

The LASUBEB chairman added that the objective of the exercise was to mobilise parents to enrol their children in primary schools.

“The objective of this drive is to mobilise communities to enrol their wards in public primary schools. That is why this exercise is strategically held at major bus stops and markets due to its teeming population and the prevailing numbers of out-of-school children in these communities based on the data gathered,” he said.

Ibrahim Chatta, a Nollywood actor, said, “Education is the key to knowledge and basic education provides opportunities for children to become responsible. Education is the best legacy parents can give to their children. Some parents want their children to attend school but are terrified about fees, not knowing  that primary education in Lagos is free and compulsory.”
