EKOEXCEL: A Continuous Investment in Teachers

October 4, 2021

It’s World Teachers Day today and we would like to shine the light on what Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has achieved so far with the EKOEXCEL programme. Teachers help to mould and shape the future society and our children and on this special day, we want to recognize and appreciate our tireless teachers.

The theme for 2021 is ‘Teachers: leading in crisis, reimagining the future’ – In this sense, World Teachers’ Day holds more importance than ever before, together we can celebrate their huge value to children, teenagers, and adults as the world is rapidly changing and largely unstable due to the ongoing pandemic.

EKOEXCEL is an education reform programme that is successfully developing more highly skilled teachers; by training, supporting and motivating existing government teachers to succeed in their classrooms. Over 14 thousand government teachers are being re-trained and upskilled through EKOEXCEL.

Teachers are at the heart of successful learning. Introducing new training models to support and empower them will impact pupil and teacher success. The EKOEXCEL training is both up-front and on-the-job; throughout the year. The teachers will in turn become more skilful in helping children to learn in a positive environment.

Leveraging technology helps teachers and headteachers to be more effective. They are also being supported through in-person and ongoing coaching. 1016 head teachers receive one-on-one coaching and support.

We are in the planning phase to introduce an annual programme to celebrate these amazing role models called EKOEXCEL CHAMPIONS and it is intended to celebrate top performers and will serve as a motivation to other tutors, healthy competition is always encouraged in the education scene.

EKOEXCEL was recently invited to present at the mEducation Alliance Symposium that took place from the 27th – 30th of September, 2021 for its immediate impact in Lagos.

The Mobiles for Education (mEducation) Alliance is a non-profit organisation focused on the evidence-driven and sustainable role of technology in education to advance quality educational outcomes.

Hon. Adebayo Adefuye, Permanent Board Member of LASUBEB and oversight chairman of the EKOEXCEL programme participated on behalf of EKOEXCEL. He was one of 145+ global panellists representing 38 countries, consisting of policy makers, donors, practitioners, researchers, and other EdTech entrepreneurs. During his session he mentioned that the essence of continuous training is to build Lagos State teachers with global standards.

Thank you to all the teachers for your willingness to make a difference in the lives of everyone you come across.

Happy World Teachers Day!
